Extremes of 911, video
Pretty much the only way to survive an armed attack is to have the chance to oneself employ a suitable weapon for defensive purposes - this ideally means having a gun. Response times for help from police will invariably be way too long to prevent a lethal attack whick takes perhaps just one to two minutes.
The video below comprises two "manufactured" examples of what might be typical 911 calls - showing two extremes of attack situations. In the first, the unarmed law abiding person is quickly the victim - in the second we find that possession of a gun by a law abiding person can save life. We choose the latter!
